I would gladly have given my kingdom for a rickshaw waiting outside the house. Under that relentless sun, with the dust clinging to everything, it would have felt nothing short of a miracle. But none came. So I resigned myself to the walk, making my way to the rickshaw stand by the hospital's other gate.
I drifted to the roadside and stopped, because the building rising before me felt as if it were looking at me. As though it were trying to tell me something. I stood there, in the middle of all the noise, at the edge of the crowd, simply watching the cranes as they slowly, languidly, carried through the air the curved metal beams that would give the final shape to the enormous dome of the building, a structure reminiscent of the Capitol.
I don’t know whether it was the intensity of the midday sun, or the almost imperceptible pace at which those huge beams glided through the air, or the insistence of the building itself on looking at me and trying to tell me something — or all of these together — but the feeling was not merely meditative. It was something beyond the ordinary, something almost transcendental.
I had been following the progress of the project every day throughout the final stretch of its preparation for Sathya Sai Baba's 100th Birthday on November 23rd. As if the occasion itself were not momentous enough, the country's Prime Minister was also expected to attend. The entire place buzzed like a beehive—embraced by all kinds of flowers and children, enveloped in an atmosphere of love without reason and audacity with every reason. A living moment "Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection", as the Great Poet says.
I have never witnessed such an amount of work, day and night, such speed, such dedication. And such perfection in the execution of the project! The very experts who had declared that it was impossible to complete the work within such a timeframe were themselves left speechless by the inch-level precision achieved in this magnificent structure.
Every morning it greeted me with a new face, unveiling another layer of its beauty.… I had never witnessed anything like it before.
A 600-bed hospital built in memory of the One they love. Just as with the other hospitals they have created in India, Sri Lanka, Fiji, Nigeria, and in Clarksdale, in the Mississippi Delta, this one too will not charge anything at all.
Rising gracefully from the heart of the hospital's central lobby is the 21-foot statue (6.4m) of Sri Sathya Sai Baba, sculpted from a single block of flawless Carrara marble, a heartfelt offering of Italian and Greek devotees and friends, and a contribution from a family in North Europe.
As you gaze upon it, it feels like it emerged from the earth or descended from the heavens. You can't tell. Soon, the mind falls silent, raptured by the majesty and sanctity of the Form. Bathed in natural light, Baba's serene figure greets every patient and visitor, soothing anxious hearts, inspiring courage, and rekindling hope.
This Hospital was a Birthday gift! And this may be the sweetest, the most magnificent aspect of it all. These works - so immense in scale and value -were begun, completed, and continue to remain sustainable because someone loved much.
At first, one. Then another, and another, and another, and another…
In the video, you will hear someone saying that they did not know that what was finally achieved, was actually humanly impossible. He is the Project Director of this work and of many others.
And you will hear the Guru share with us "The Formula"—with the simplicity of great truths, the quiet authority of lived experience, the deepest humility, and the nobility of the True Human Being:
"We do this because it needs to be done."
A Study on love, fearlessness, and the spirit of a whole-souled Human. A study on the audacity to plunge into the void.
